Both announcements followed PayPal and Venmo's integration of the Ethereum Name Service (ENS) into their platforms in September this year. 2024 has been an exciting and productive year in the domain name industry, particularly in bridging the application gap between blockchain and domain names. Because AI is merely a means to an end, while Web3 technologies—powered by crypto—have the potential to empower individual self-custody and decentralize control, which are essential to an open, democratic digital ecosystem.

With the crypto user base growing rapidly, it's critical that we factor Web3 technologies into the next generation of browsers. This article aims to explore how tokenized domains can help bridge the gap between Web2 and Web3 browsers, addressing adoption challenges and supporting new players like Brave and HVR in building an ecosystem for decentralized social browsing.

In the latest edition of Namefi’s weekly SOP4 (Standard Operating Procedure) Twitter space, co-hosts Victor Zhou and Sam Yilmaz gathered to discuss the latest challenges and opportunities in building a decentralized domain name ecosystem. Walking through the streets of San Francisco, the duo navigated technical glitches to provide an in-depth update on their startup's progress. Here's a quick breakdown of the main topics they covered:

• Email Mishaps During Domain Transfers: Sam shared his personal horror story of losing access to his emails while migrating domains. The Namefi team jumped into action, troubleshooting name server issues, highlighting the fragile nature of domain infrastructure. Lesson learned? Migrating critical domains can lead to unforeseen disruptions, but Namefi aims to make the process more seamless.

• The Registrar Dilemma: One of the main issues discussed was how the losing registrar (the one a domain is being transferred from) often doesn't make the transfer process easy. There's a lack of incentive for registrars to pass on all necessary DNS information, leading to downtime and security risks. Victor floated the idea of creating a new standard to ensure smoother transfers between registrars.

• Blockchain and Domain Trust: The Namefi team emphasized the importance of security in domain transfers, especially for businesses that rely heavily on domains for email, app hosting, and more. They touched on the vulnerability of domain name systems (DNS), which could lead to massive security breaches if a registrar is compromised. The ultimate solution? Bringing these processes on-chain to remove trust from third parties.

• Subdomains as the Future of Digital Identity: Victor introduced a compelling use case for subdomains. Beyond their technical utility, they could serve as badges of belonging, whether in political groups, fan clubs, or decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs). Namefi is launching a subdomain issuance feature for domains like trump.club and harris.club, tapping into the U.S. election fervor to test this concept.

• On-chain Domains and NFTs: The conversation also touched on the long-term vision of tokenizing domain names and subdomains on-chain. This approach would allow domains to be sold as NFTs, with ownership tracked transparently via blockchain. They even speculated on the potential to create revenue-sharing models for domain traffic—where domain and subdomain owners could earn from ads or apps hosted on the domain.

• Building the "Second Floor" of the Internet: Sam and Victor used a real estate metaphor to describe their approach: first, Namefi needs to establish a solid foundation, by offering smoother domain registration and management. Only then can they build the “penthouse”—features like fractional ownership and revenue distribution among subdomain holders.

• Credit Card Payments Coming Soon: A more immediate update? Namefi is preparing to launch credit card payments for domain purchases, significantly reducing friction for users. (Launched already!)

Despite technical difficulties, the discussion highlighted Namefi’s mission to modernize the internet’s most fundamental asset—domain names—through blockchain, ultimately decentralizing ownership and making the process more transparent and secure.

In this newsletter, we present a special offer on SLDs and TLDs, thoughtfully curated to align with the fastest-growing sectors in AI, robotics, and Web3. We believe that a well-chosen name inherently captures the essence of our technosphere. Naturally, a fundamental understanding of domain pricing mechanisms—such as the influence of letter and number combinations—is essential for any good domain investor. To excel as a great domain investor, however, requires the ability to capture value within the ever-evolving technosphere at the right moment.

We are developing a new SLD and SLDxTLD suggestion feature to empower Namefi users to become great domain investors. In this process, we will actively seek your feedback and suggestions through this newsletter. This initiative was inspired by a philosophical insight I gained after our recent Namefi SOP2 debate: "Will Domain Names Become the Identity Layer of the Next-Gen Internet?" (If you missed it, you can listen here).

When comparing a domain name—whether Web3 or Web2—to a blockchain address or an IP (internet protocol) address, aside from their human-readable nature, what truly sets them apart? The key difference lies in their temporal nature. Addresses are static and unchanging, persisting indefinitely, while names are dynamic and time-bound, evolving, decaying, or even disappearing over time. Philosophically, ontology concerns the nature of being or existence as assigned to objects. We, as time-bound beings, require identities that reflect this temporality. It is the passage of time and the changes it brings that imbue objects with value. In the past, we lacked the technology to encapsulate time within objects; now, with AI, we have that prediction capability. At Namefi, our goal is to equip every Namefier with the latest technology to excel as great domain name investors.

What about blockchain, DeFi, and smart contracts? The utility of blockchain in managing domain name assets will become evident as supplementary infrastructures, such as domain name pricing oracles and Real-World Asset (RWA) liquidity, mature. When that happens, we will be positioned to facilitate lending, borrowing, and even collateralizing domain names for leveraged on-chain perpetual trading with ease. However, we must also exercise patience as this technology continues to mature and integrate into real-world applications. We take great pride in being part of this transformative movement and in witnessing how our technosphere is guiding us toward a future where technology enhances our lives and drives positive change. In the future newsletter series, we will also present a product feature guiding tips and also educational content that help to bridge your knowledge between Web2 and Web3.

Link your domain names to Web3 social by Integration with Ethereum Follow Protocol (EFP) 

In your Namefi’s free AutoPark page, you may have noticed a new icon with an ‘Ethereum +’ logo on it. Yes, we have recently become Ethereum Follow Protocol (EFP)’s launch partner to enable Web2 identities such as domain names to be linked to Web3 social platforms through the gateway of EFP. 

EFP is a decentralized social networking protocol built on the Ethereum blockchain. It was created to enable a more open and interoperable social media ecosystem, allowing users to own their social graph and data across different platforms based on their ENS names. 

The founder of EFP is Brantly Millegan (Brantly.eth, in case you want to follow him onchain), a well-known figure in the Ethereum and Web3 space. Brantly has been involved in the blockchain industry for several years and is also known for his founding work with Ethereum Name Service (ENS).

Namefi has hosted a Twitter space with Brantly when EFP was not launched yet. If you are interested, please recap in our Twitter (Namefi_io). 

Long story short, now with Namefi, you do not have to give up all of your Web2 identities to be able to join Web3 social. Every Namefi domain name NFT is resolved to your Ethereum address (0x…) so you can participate in EFP through Web2 domain names. This is just maverick! We do not have to invent new wheels for everything we do in Web3 and Namefi helps you to enable that! Web3 Ecosystem Updates 

In the past two weeks, we have had two important updates regarding partnerships. 

Namefi became Starknet Foundation Seed Grant Grantee 

We are excited to announce that Namefi has received a Seed Grant from the Starknet Foundation to support our research and development of a decentralized group identity (DeGID). Namefi is proud to be the first to introduce DeGID, highlighting its significance for the future of internet collaboration. This project is being developed by D3Serve Labs, our parent company, which not only created Namefi but also develops other products that digitalize trust. For more details, please refer to the link above.

The inspiration for developing DeGID came from the personal experiences of our founder and CEO, Victor Zhou, as a Wikipedia editor and his involvement in the platform's governance system (you can listen to his story in the NamefiSpace recap below). The core idea is that we now have cryptographic techniques that allow group contributors, like Wikipedia editors, to participate anonymously without compromising their accountability. Historically, balancing privacy and accountability has been a challenge, but with the support of zero-knowledge cryptography and the Starknet Foundation, we are embarking on a new journey to enhance online identities.

Namefi became the launch partner of Ethereum Follow Protocol (EFP)

As you might already know, Namefi was one of the first launch partners of Ethereum Follow Protocol (EFP), and we are very proud of that! EFP is in itself a significant innovation in the Web3 space, simple and elegant just like Ethereum Name Services (ENS). It enables follow relationships to be recorded onchain such that a whole social graph can be constructed onchain for more applicable social applications to emerge in Web3. It is a truly pioneering and important infrastructure in space. Now Namefi is using EFP to enable Web2 identity holders to join the Web3 social network seamlessly so your identities that have developed in the past are not lost. 

NamefiSpace Recap

In the past two weeks, we have also made progress in providing useful information to Namefiers. We have hosted three NamefiSpaces one with Dylan Kugler, ecosystem from Starknet Foundation, and two NamefiSOPs with Victor and our interim COO Sam Yilmaz. NamefiSOP is a new NamefiSpace series that was inspired by the early episodes of The Stack Overflow podcast which was hosted by its two co-founders. The two co-founders started the space with themselves when they were starting their startups to talk about their product features trying to maximise the product utility and value for their users. NamefiSOP (can be read as Namefi Stack Overflow podcast or Namefi Standard Operating Procedure) has the same goal of talking to our community to produce the best product possible and to also distribute to the market successful as the next generation domain platform.

In traditional computing systems, concepts such as user ID (UID) and group ID (GID) play a fundamental role in managing access control and permissions. Systems like Linux rely heavily on these constructs, where a user (UID) is linked to specific groups (GID) to facilitate efficient resource management across a network of users. However, as we progress toward a vision of a "world computer" enabled by decentralized technologies, there is an urgent need to rethink these core principles to align with the requirements of a distributed ecosystem. While the decentralized equivalent of UID has been effectively realized through solutions like Ethereum’s address-based identification, the challenge of a decentralized Group ID (DeGID) remains unresolved.

Recognizing this gap, Namefi is taking a pioneering step as the first mover in researching and developing Decentralized Group Identity (DeGID), supported by a Seed Grant from the Starknet Foundation. This groundbreaking initiative focuses on creating a scalable, privacy-preserving authorization system based on group identities, leveraging zero-knowledge (ZK) proofs. DeGID's approach, first proposed and researched by Namefi, aims to address the longstanding challenge of balancing privacy and accountability in digital ecosystems, paving the way for a new paradigm in decentralized identity.

Rethinking Digital Identity: The Need for Group Identity in Decentralized Systems

The tension between privacy and accountability in digital ecosystems remains a central challenge in the design of decentralized platforms. High-profile incidents, such as the Essjay controversy on Wikipedia—where a pseudonymous editor falsely claimed academic credentials—highlight the potential misuse of anonymity in online environments. While anonymity serves as a crucial mechanism to protect individual freedoms and promote open expression, it also presents risks by fostering environments where users can act without consequence.

Despite the promises of blockchain technology, which emphasizes transparency and immutable records, the issue of verifiable credibility in a pseudonymous world remains unsolved. Cryptographic identities, while secure, still permit bad actors to hide behind layers of privacy, operating without the accountability necessary to build institutional trust. This unresolved conflict between maintaining individual anonymity and institutional integrity continues to be a significant impediment to creating fully transparent, trustworthy, and decentralized systems.

Exploring Namefi's Group Identity (DeGID): A Decentralized Approach in Concept

In response to this dilemma, Namefi, supported by Seed Grant from the Starknet Foundation, has embarked on the pioneering research and development of a concept called Decentralized Group Identity (DeGID). First proposed and researched by Namefi, DeGID represents an innovative approach to digital identity, focusing on enabling privacy and accountability within group-based frameworks. The initiative is centered on leveraging advanced cryptographic methodologies, specifically zero-knowledge (ZK) proofs facilitated by Starkware, to create a system where group identities, rather than individual identities, form the basis for participation in digital ecosystems.

The design of DeGID envisions a structure based on parent domains, group-ids, or affiliate-ids, allowing entities to be grouped under a common identifier while maintaining individual anonymity. This model aims to distribute accountability across a network of contributors, effectively embedding a collective sense of responsibility without compromising the privacy of the individual members. By exploring these group-based constructs, Namefi's DeGID seeks to balance the competing demands of privacy and trustworthiness in decentralized systems.

While DeGID remains in its conceptual phase, Namefi's early-stage research aims to uncover scalable, privacy-preserving pathways for managing authorization and identity in both traditional and decentralized networks. In a recent and exciting initiative, Victor Zhou, founder of Namefi, kicked off a new series of Twitter Spaces, Namefi Founder Space, to engage more closely with the community and discuss the future of domain registration. Joining him is Sam Yilmaz, a seasoned venture investor in the crypto space, a cofounder and general partner of Bloccelerate.vc. Sam was invited by Victor to join Namefi for a few days a week as its interim COO, a joint effort of Entrepreneur-in-Residence program between Namefi and Bloccelerate.vc. Inspired by the early days of Stack Overflow, where the founders recorded their journey and shared their thoughts on building a product, Victor decided to create a similar space for open discussions on domains, blockchain, and the evolving internet. This first session provided an opportunity to hear from industry professionals and domain enthusiasts, sparking conversations on the potential of tokenization and the role of traditional registrars.

As Victor explained:

"We started this Twitter Space to build a sense of community where we can learn from each other and share what we're working on. Just like the founders of Stack Overflow shared their journey, we want to share ours as we build Namefi."

With that spirit of openness and collaboration, the session brought together voices like Gary Palmer Jr., and Ishmilly to discuss key issues shaping the domain space.

Tokenization and the Future of Domain Names

One of the main topics of the conversation was the tokenization of domain names through blockchain technology. Tokenization refers to the process of converting domain names into digital assets on the blockchain, offering benefits like increased transparency, faster transactions, and secure ownership.

Victor shared how Namefi aims to empower users by providing them with sovereignty over their assets:

"We want to build Namefi so that you can be a sovereign person to own things. You can be a sovereign person to be trusted."

This focus on giving individuals control over their digital assets aligns with the broader trend toward blockchain-based systems in the domain space. Sam Yilmaz echoed this sentiment, particularly highlighting the liquidity potential of on-chain domains:

"I wanted my assets to be on-chain. I wanted to be able to market them and have easier access to liquidity."

Though tokenization is still in its early stages, the participants saw it as a promising development for the future of domain registration.

Traditional Registrars: GoDaddy's Role

The conversation also delved into the role of traditional domain registrars like GoDaddy. As one of the largest players in the industry, GoDaddy’s approach to blockchain and tokenization became a focal point.

Ishmilly, a long-time domain investor, explained his continued reliance on GoDaddy, primarily due to their strong customer support:

"The customer service experience has kept me with GoDaddy. I know who to call when there’s an issue, and I feel that they take care of their customers."

However, he expressed skepticism about GoDaddy’s willingness to fully adopt blockchain technology, suggesting that their current business model might not align with the low-cost, decentralized nature of tokenized domains:

"GoDaddy has no incentive to accelerate tokenization unless it boosts their profits. Tokenization reduces commissions, makes transfers quicker, and could disrupt their existing business model."

Gary Palmer Jr. offered a different view, noting GoDaddy’s recent collaboration with Ethereum Name Service (ENS) to implement gasless DNSSEC for certain domains as a sign that they are considering blockchain-based advancements:

"The CEO of GoDaddy reached out to ENS to integrate DNSSEC. This shows they are at least exploring blockchain technology and its potential applications."

Adoption Barriers and Challenges

While tokenization offers various benefits, several participants acknowledged the challenges of widespread adoption. Hedgehog.eth, a participant familiar with the ENS domain space, pointed out that while blockchain-based domains provide speed and security, they remain relatively niche for now:

"I love buying ENS domains on-chain. It’s fast, secure, and I can trust that it’s mine immediately. But most people are still using traditional domains, and the transition won’t happen overnight."

Participants also discussed the psychological hurdles associated with adopting new technology. As Ishmilly explained, users can be hesitant to shift away from familiar systems, even when newer technologies offer advantages:

"People are not going to abandon the current system for tokenization overnight. There’s a psychological barrier when it comes to adopting new technology, even when it offers clear benefits."

Perspectives on the Future of Domain Registration

Overall, the conversation highlighted both the potential and challenges of integrating blockchain technology into domain registration. While tokenization presents opportunities for faster transactions and improved ownership security, traditional registrars like GoDaddy continue to dominate the market.

Participants suggested that for blockchain-based systems to gain wider adoption, they will need to provide clear and compelling advantages over existing methods—whether through better user experiences, competitive pricing, or more robust customer support.

Murda.eth summed up the value of tokenization with an analogy:

"Tokenization is like upgrading from a rotary phone to a smartphone. It’s faster, more efficient, and gives you more control over your domain assets."

Conclusion

This first Namefi Founder Twitter Space provided valuable insights into the future of domain registration and the potential impact of blockchain technology. While tokenization is a promising development, the discussion highlighted the need for gradual transition, with both technological improvements and user adoption playing a role in shaping the industry’s future.

The focus of this week’s newsletter is really to illustrate some of the new features our engineers have accomplished for getting valuable feedback from you. New Product Features 

1. 457+ TLD coverage powered by Dynadot

First thing first! We are really proud that we are now able to provide the best TLD coverage within the onchain registrar circle. Thanks to our partnership with Dynadot, who also deeply cares about its customer experience in terms of price and TLD coverage, we are able to support 457+ TLD coverage. If you do not find the TLD support you need, please go to our second new feature update to find where you can find our new customer support window just within the decentralized application (dApp) itself!  

2. New Customer Support 

Yes, we have finally enabled the Intercom customer support bot in our dApp with full customisation of our brand color! If you cannot find the TLD support you need, please message us here! 3. Hidden feature of AutoPark: find user profile (ask community: how do you want to be discovered?)  

Wondering how to discover other like-minded domainers? Namefi is here to help. Namefi AutoPark displays the user profile which is clickable, allowing you to find out the owner’s portfolio. For example, type in 000000.click in your browser, it will take you to the Namefi autoPark page since 000000.click is a Namefi domain NFT. The user profile page on the left is rendered to be clickable such that one click can take you to the portfolio page of that blockchain address. In this case, this address only owns a single NFT. 

4. Notifications 

We have also enabled notifications after you connect your wallet. The notification is located immediately at the left of your profile as shown below. After you click it, the notification page will show you the historical transactions and actions you made on Namefi. 

5. Table and Grid View for Namefi NFTs under Dashboard  

In the past, we only had a Grid view for you to display your domain assets. However, when more and more assets are registered under an account/address, it becomes inconvenient to search for the asset. For this reason, we enabled Table view with a little search bar on top to search for your asset more quickly. However, if you prefer Grid view, you can choose to view your assets in Grid by going to the top right corner to change the visualization. 

6. Balance History Recap 

We also enabled Balance History under the Activities tab to allow you to view the transaction history. If you are registering domains under your business account, it would be easier for you to copy the transaction table for your accounting purposes. It shows on which chain you were implementing the transactions [Charge] or being airdropped [Mint]. The active and passive transactions are then marked in terms of + (green) and - (red) signs indicated by the transaction status (success or failure). 

7. Tips on feature hacking: Set your profile picture on ENS to be viewed in Namefi dApp

Recently, I found that after editing your profile picture of my ENS handle on ens.domains, Namefi will instantaneously display the change you made on your profile picture. How cool is that! Thanks to our backend team for the excellent work!
