Can Harberger's Tax change the digital ads landscape? | Guo Liu Cofounder of Matters Lab and Billboard Protocol
Billboard Protocol, developed by @Mattersw3b, is set to change the way we think about advertising and domain ownership. By utilizing Harberger taxes, it allows asset owners to self-assess the value of their domains and pay ongoing taxes based on that valuation. This creates a more liquid market and offers domainers the chance to monetize their assets in flexible ways, moving beyond one-time sales to ongoing revenue.
For example, a domain like "travel.com" could be continuously priced by its owner. Advertisers could bid to display their ads on this domain, with the highest bidder securing the ad space. This setup not only allows the domain owner to earn from ad revenue but also benefits advertisers who can reach a targeted audience effectively. The owner retains control of the domain as long as they pay the self-assessed tax, creating a sustainable revenue model.
Interestingly, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has also expressed interest in applying Harberger taxes to Ethereum Name Service (ENS) domain names. He sees potential in this model for addressing monopoly issues in domain squatting, improving investment efficiency, and creating a more dynamic ownership system for digital assets. https://vitalik.eth.limo/general/2022/09/09/ens.html &https://vitalik.eth.limo/general/2018/04/20/radical_markets.htm
Matters.Town (https://Matters.town), the largest Web3 publishing platform globally, hosts over 100,000 creators and forms the largest community on the IPFS decentralized network for publishing original content. Launched in 2018 and opened for public registration in June 2019, the platform features a diverse range of material, including news coverage, magazines, reports, articles, and novels. It's designed as a community-driven space where "Matters Architects" can share knowledge, establish periodicals and publishing houses, and use open APIs to produce various data and encyclopedias, all while emphasizing user autonomy and freedom of expression.
Matters.Town was created by Matters Lab, founded in 2018 by Jieping Zhang (CEO), @_GuoLiu (CTO), and Beryl Liu (operations). The company focuses on developing decentralized technologies to support a freer and fairer creator economy. In addition to Matters.Town, they've developed other Web3 projects such as Traveloggers and The Writing Award.
Joining us to discuss these innovations is Guo Liu (@_GuoLiu), co-founder and CTO of Matters Lab. With a background in software engineering and data science from roles at Oracle, DataScience.com, and UC Irvine, Guo brings technical expertise to developing decentralized systems for content creation and social media in the Web3 space. Under his leadership, Matters Lab has secured $2 million in pre-series A funding from investors including Assembly Partners, CRUST, and Protocol Labs, and continues to develop decentralized systems for the evolving landscape of Web3 platforms.
